A "Green Certified" Natural Resource Company Dedicated to the Long Term Sustainable Management of our Forest Resources
With more than a century of business in Michigan, Keweenaw has become the successful, environmentally-sensitive, forest resource manager and reliable supplier that it is today.
Keweenaw's forests are situated in the "slower growing" Great Lakes region of the United States and produce northern hardwoods of exceptional grain and quality.
Keweenaw prides itself on product quality and quality service. We utilize highly qualified and well trained logging and trucking contractors to ensure maximum product value and consistent delivery in nearly all seasons of the year.
Equally important, Keweenaw's professional forestry staff practices sustainable forest management to guarantee a continuous and increasing product supply, without adverse environmental impact.
Dedicated to the sound environmental stewardship of its forest resources, Keweenaw is the first timber management company in the United States to be certified under the auspices of the Forest Stewardship Council Smart Wood Program. Certified "Well Managed", our products may be marketed as "Green Certified" through the appropriate chain of custody.
Keweenaw deals in direct log sales only. Our veneer logs and sawlogs are used by our customers in the milling of high grade hardwood veneer paneling, furniture, flooring and lumber. In addition, boltwood logs are available for pallet materials. Hardwood and softwood pulpwood logs are also available.Timber Species Available
1) Hard Maple (Acer saccharum) is one of the most important commercial species in the Great Lakes region. It is used for furniture, interior finish, plywood, flooring, bowling alleys, veneer, sporting goods, chopping blocks, and tool handles to mention a few. Maple is very strong and highly resistant to shock. It is one of the major species on Keweenaw's timberlands.
2) Birds Eye Maple (Acer saccharum) is a form of Hard Maple found in the Great Lakes region of the United States. The grain is curled, which creates a bird's eye effect. A highly sought after wood, it is used for veneer, furniture and cabinets.
3) Red Maple (Acer rubrum) seasons reasonably well and shrinks only moderately in drying. Its bending power is slightly better than Hard Maple.
4) Basswood (Tilia americana) will not shrink or change unduly once it is dried. It can be easily glued and has satisfactory nail and screw holding power. This lumber is used for furniture parts, mobile homes, picture frames and toys. Basswood veneer is used for baskets, small containers and in plywood manufacturing. Because Basswood is soft, it is also used by artists in wood carving.
5) Yellow Birch (Betula lutea) is strong and has a high resistance to impact. Birch has good machining properties and high nail and screw holding power. It is used extensively for veneer, furniture, flooring and woodenware.
6) White Birch (Betula papyrifera) similar to the Yellow Birch has a high resistance to impact. Birch has good machining properties and high nail and screw holding power. White Birch is used for furniture, cabinetwork and flooring.
7) White Ash (Fraxinus americana) seasons well with moderate shrinkage and little degrade. Ash wood is used for furniture, veneer cabinets and handles for tools and sporting goods.
8) Black Ash (Fraxinus nigra) is softer and weaker than White Ash, with a coarse grain. It is used for baskets, hoops, splint boxes and interior finish of houses. The black burls are highly sought after by veneer manufacturers.
9) Black Cherry (Prunus serotina) seasons readily and holds dimensions well after seasoning. Black Cherry has low shrinkage, satisfactory gluing and good machining properties. Some uses for Black Cherry are furniture, cabinet work, musical instruments and toys.
